Students from ATLP’s Coleshill School are keeping their spirits up during lockdown with a series of weekly competitions – which have encouraged them to get arty in the great outdoors.

In the challenges, which are set each week by Coleshill’s Associate Assistant Headteacher Matthew Grove, students can earn ‘Spirit’ reward points – which are part of the school’s scheme to teach real life skills, so pupils become well-rounded individuals who thrive.

The Spirit scheme is based on six principles – Self-management, Perseverance, Innovation, Reflection, Independence and Teamwork.

And in the first contest, students got to go outside and enjoy nature whilst competing their daily exercise, for a wildlife imagery competition open to all year groups from the school, which is part of the respected Arthur Terry Learning Partnership.

Mr Grove said:

This was a chance for our students to compete their daily exercise and engage with nature at the same time.  We had a fantastic response from our students and it was a really difficult decision to choose the winners.  I would like to thank everyone who took part in the competition and well done to the winners in each year group.”

Winners included Year 7 students Corey – who photographed a delicate spider’s web – and Joe, who snapped an inquisitive goat, who was getting into the spirit of lockdown by peering through a fence. Year 9 student Emma photographed countryside frost, while Year 10 pupil Leo captured a close-up of a horse.

The school is sharing the winning images on its social media platforms.

For their second competition, students have been set a ‘Helping Hands’ challenge, to capture a moment when they are helping out at home during lockdown – whether that’s baking a cake, supporting a sibling with their remote learning or simply chipping in with household chores.

Again, Spirit points are available to the winners, as well as points for one of the school’s four houses: Beauchamp, Dudley, Greville and Newburgh.

The Coleshill School Headteacher, Ian Smith-Childs, said:

Our weekly competitions are a brilliant way of keeping students’ spirits up.  Mr Grove is doing a great job of setting these weekly competitions, and we’re all looking forward to seeing the results each week.”
