Youngsters from an Erdington school followed in the hoof steps of the most famous reindeer of them all when they took part in a festive sponsored run to support a local hospice.

Pupils at Slade Primary School, which is part of the respected Arthur Terry Learning Partnership, donned festive antlers when they took part in the Rudolph Run to raise cash for the nearby John Taylor Hospice.

Wearing antlers provided by the much-loved charity, students ran in the Slade Road school’s two playgrounds in ten-minute slots throughout the afternoon on Wednesday, December 14.

The fun event was organised as part of the national Rudolph Run scheme, which supports hospices across the UK, but also aimed to help Slade Primary achieve a Silver UNICEF Award in Rights Respecting.

Daniel Preece, Year 3 Class Teacher, said: “As we try to achieve our silver award, we want to do more for the local community and this charity is a close-by hospice that always needs funding to keep running.

“This is a much-loved hospice, so we know the money raised by the run will go to a very good cause.

“The children absolutely loved taking part in the run – and the staff joined in too!”

Pupils are even using the run to learn more about maths – staff measured the length of the playground and challenged the children to work out how far they ran, based on the number of laps they completed.

Slade Primary has set up a JustGiving page to collect sponsorship for the Rudolph Run, while staff are also taking cash donations.

And students have been getting into the festive spirit in other ways too. A Christmas Fair, held on Friday, December 9, opened the school to the local community, while children have been making and writing cards to residents of the local hospice.

Headteacher Jenny Maskell said:

“We are so proud of the children for taking part in the Rudolph Run. There was as a real sense of excitement in the school on the day and hopefully we have raised lots of money for the hospice.

“It was a great way of celebrating the Christmas spirit while teaching the children about the importance of helping others who are less fortunate.”
