Coventry students fly high to victory at RAF Cosford

Students at West Coventry Academy (WCA) soared to success as they took top spot in the RAF Museum Cosford’s Glider Challenge.
Five Year 7 students, alongside five Year 5 pupils from fellow city school Earlsdon Primary, were taught and guided collaboratively at WCA in a series of after-school sessions leading up to the event at the RAF station near Wolverhampton.
In preparation, the students explored the theory of flight, developed various design ideas and created prototypes from various modelling materials such as cardboard and foamboard. Each team tested their prototypes to determine which design produced the most effective glider.
On the day of the trip, WCA students showcased their hard work and dedication by building their final glider at the Cosford museum. Competing alongside around 20 other teams of Key Stage 3 students from schools across the Midlands, the team prepared their display board and presented their projects to members of the RAF who judged the success of their presentations and displayed project work.
Their presentations were both confident and knowledgeable, impressing everyone with their expertise and enthusiasm.
The triumphant WCA students – whose school is part of the highly-respected Arthur Terry Learning Partnership – were Finn Fisher, Jihan Abedalkader, Riley Dixon, Cherish Mufunda and Keeya Barker.
Matt Smith, WCA’s Head of Design Technology, said: “We are incredibly proud of our students’ efforts and success in this project. They demonstrated creativity, resilience and teamwork to make this win at RAF Cosford a memorable achievement for West Coventry Academy.
“It was also great having our students work with the younger Earlsdon pupils on this project.”
