Christmas has come early at a Lichfield primary school thanks to a novel idea that has inspired generous families and friends to ‘gift’ nearly 100 great reads to Scotch Orchard’s virtual book drive.

When the usual Parent Teacher Association’s (PTA) fundraising activities were shelved due to the Covid pandemic, Scotch Orchard Primary School, part of the Arthur Terry Learning Partnership (ATLP) launched its first ever virtual book drive and Amazon gift list – and headteacher Jo Bishop is “overwhelmed” by the epic response.

From Judy Blume to Eoin Colfer, the popular school has received more than 90 books, which will update and enrich the Key Stage 2 class libraries, introducing the children to a vast range of exciting and diverse contemporary and classic texts.

Mrs Bishop (pictured with Scotch Orchard pupils) said:

We’ve been absolutely overwhelmed by the generosity of our Scotch Orchard community who have given the gift of reading and purchased a book from our Amazon Gift List.

“We know times are challenging for many families within our local community, so we are hugely grateful for their support. Our children are so excited to see all the packages arriving – it’s like Christmas has come early!”

She added:

Reading for pleasure is proven to be one of the most powerful boosts not only for a child’s educational success, but also to enhance their opportunities in later life. Reading is also beneficial in supporting children’s mental health and well-being, which is especially important during these uncertain and challenging times.”

Teaching agency, Zest Education, which donated 10 books, said:

We are incredibly happy and grateful to be able to collaborate with and support some of our local schools, during what continues to be an exceptionally challenging time for staff, students and parents this year.”

Local businesses, Hair by Mel and Aspire People, have also kindly donated books.

Scotch Orchard’s wish list is still open for donations and there are 40 books remaining to purchase to reach the target. If you would like to buy a book for the school and give the gift of reading, visit https://www.amazon.co.uk/hz/wishlist/ls/376PTAJQ7ITFJ?ref_=wl_share
