The love of reading has brought its rewards for Brookvale Primary School pupils in the shape of prestigious awards from Reading Plus.

Reading Plus is an online reading development programme embedded in more than 1,300 schools across the UK and the Erdington primary – part of the Arthur Terry Learning Partnership – has been named the country’s ‘Most Engaged Reading Plus School’ (Key Stage 2) for this academic year.

Furthermore, there is richly deserved recognition for two extraordinary Year 6 Brookvale children – Reuben Wilkins and Ansh Mahay – who have earned awards for ‘Vocabulary Star of the Year’ and ‘Most Words Read by a Pupil’ respectively at Key Stage 2.

Brookvale Reading Lead and Year 2 Teacher Siobhan Carlill said: “We are so proud of our Key Stage 2 children and especially our two Year 6 boys.

“These awards celebrate our outstanding KS2 children as well as our passionate and dedicated teachers and teaching assistants who have gone the extra mile and achieved these brilliant results.

“Our supportive whole school community of families are a key part of this and have made a valuable contribution to this exceptional success. A special word of thanks to Carol Ashford who leads our Reading Plus programme in school and shares her powerful passion for books with our children.”

Brookvale poets’ words of wisdom to feature in new book

Young poets at Brookvale are all smiles after learning that their fantastic work is to be published.

Children across Key Stage 2 took part in the ‘Once Upon a Dream’ poetry competition held by Young Writers and some of their work is now going to be seen in print.

Teacher Hannah Willars, the new Acting Writing Lead at Brookvale, explained: “Last term, I was contacted by a company called Young Writers which hosts a series of writing competitions each year to choose children’s work for publication.

“This gives our creative writers a chance to shine as well as instilling a love for writing. As part of this year’s competition, a variety of children across Key Stage 2 created poems for the Once Upon a Dream competition.

“Their creativity flourished when creating poems within the theme, from dream fantasies to aspirations.

“A number of Brookvale children will have their work published in the book entitled ‘Once Upon a Dream – A Poetry Party’. The book, I believe, will be published in August and we will be sure to present this proudly in our library!”
